Huchuy Qosqo Hike (small Cusco) to Machu Picchu is perfect if you are looking for a one day walk in the mountains observing the beautiful landscapes and wildlife of the Urubamba Mountian Range in the Andes. Huchuy Qosqo Hike is one of the excellent and popular alternative treks to Machu Picchu. On this trek, you will see impressive Andean mountains, birds, creeks and sacred lakes, as well as the magnificent archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo. You will pass through different communities and have the opportunity to see their customs, agriculture, clothing, and language. On the Huchuy Qosqo Hike, you will visit the salt mines and the archaeological site of Moray as our group treks to Machu Picchu Mountain.

Itinerary
Day 1
CUSCO – TAMBO MACHAY – HUCHUY QOSQO.
Pachacutec Expeditions will begin your Huchay Qosqo Hike by picking you up from your hotel and driving you to the achaeological center of TAMBO MACHAY, known as the “Source of Eternal Youth”. After visiting these sites, we will begin to walk for 15 kilometers on foot, ascending towards the summit of the mountain where we will observe the valley of Cusco.
After reaching the summit, we will pass by lakes Qoricocha and Yanacocha where we will stop for lunch. From there, we will descend until we reach the community of Pukamarca. After a short rest, we will continue our walk to León Punku, which are famous stone remains that contain mysterious rock formations. We will continue to the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo to have dinner. Tonight, we will have a home stay with a local family and celebrate the first day of our Huchuy Qosqo Hike.
Day 2
HUCHUY QOSQO – LAMAY- MORAY- SALT MINES -AGUAS CALIENTES.
After breakfast, our professional guide will give us a tour around Huchuy Qosqo, located at elevation of (11,800 feet/3,600 meters). We will have enough time to explore the entire site. After the visit, we will continue our way on the Huchuy Qosqo Hike for about two hours until we reach the highest pass of our journey, at (13,800 feet/4,200 meters). After admiring the mountains, we will descend for two hours until we reach Lamay, the spot where we will eat lunch. After a delicious lunch, we will catch the bus that will take us to MORAY, an archaeological site that was the center of agricultural experimentation in the time of the Incas. We will also go to SALINERAS, a salt mine that still functions today. In the afternoon, we will continue the Huchay Qosqo hike towards Ollantaytambo to catch the train to Aguas Calientes, a town near Machu Picchu. Here, we will spend the night in a hotel, making sure we get a good night’s rest for our trek to Machu Picchu in the morning.
Day 3
AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO.
We will start our day very early in order to take the first bus to the city of Machu Picchu. We will be the first visitors of the day to enjoy the magic and mystery of one of the new wonders of the world in the calm and fresh morning. Here, we will have a chance to celebrate the completion of our Huchay Qosqo Hike! We will have a walking tour of the city with one of our professional guides that will take around 2-3 hours. After the tour, you will have free time for your own exploration of the city. After saying goodbye to your guides from the Huchuy Qosqo Hike, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes to board the train back to Cusco.

Huchuy Qosqo Hike services include pick-up and drop-off at your hotel in Cusco. This is an additional service that we provide which sets us apart from other tour providers who offer treks to Machu Picchu.
For all group bookings larger than 3 people, we offer you a free city tour OR a tour of the Sacred Valley.
Pachacutec Expeditions does not have any hidden fees. We include a porter who will carry your personal belongings on the Huchuy Qosqo Hike with no additional cost.
For the Huchuy Qosqo Hike, we will provide you with a duffel bag to put all of your belongings in. The duffel bags easily fit 8 Kilograms /17.5 pounds per person including your sleeping bags.
However, you will still need to carry your day pack with all of your essentials like water, sunscreen, passport, etc.
We offer a discount of US $20 to students with a valid International Student Identity Card (ISIC) and to children under the age of 16 years old. Scanned copies of your ISIC card or child’s passport must be provided at the time of payment of the deposit for the Huchuy Qosqo Hike in order to qualify for the international discount.
Train for the end of your Trek
We suggest that our tourists take the 6:45 p.m. train. This departure time will allow you to spend more time at Machu Picchu and do more activities like climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, which can be booked additionally for an extra cost. Also, you can walk to the sun gate , the inca bridge, still have time to enjoy the hot springs or some cervezas after a long trek.
The 6:45 p.m. train will arrive in Ollantaytambo train station at 8:20 p.m. and you will be picked up by your driver outside of the train station. The driver will be holding a sign with your name on it so that there will be no confusion. If you do not see the driver initially, just wait for them outside of the train station. Once the driver has picked you up, you will travel for 1 1/2 hours in a van before you arrive back at your hotel/hostel. Arrival time in Cusco is approximately 10:00 p.m.
Also, we suggest the 2:55 p.m. train for travelers who are planning to leave Cusco city early in the morning on the next day to continue with their travel plans.
Important: We guarantee this early Expedition departures, as per the itinerary, only if you book your tours in 2 months in advance. Otherwise, we may be forced to offer an Expedition train that departs at 6:45 p.m.
There is an option to upgrade your train to the Vistadome train which is an extra $35 per person. Please let us your preference at the time of booking.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
If you are thinking of climbing Huayna Picchu Mountain you must book in advance. Only 400 people can hike Huayna Picchu per day. You will climb it on your own after the walking tour of Machu Picchu at around 10 .00 am. We recomend you to book this ticket in advance since there are a limited number of people permited to climb Huayna Pichhu Mountain each day. Machu Picchu Mountain, which also offers amazing views of the city is a great alternative. We recomend it if Huayna Picchu Mountain is overbooked.
