Choquequirao Trek

The Choquequirao Trek is a part of network of Andean towns that made up once the Inca Empire. Choquequirao was in touch with Machu Picchu by a network of trails. The Choquequirao Trek takes you to discover a location of the Inca town surrounded by an abundant flora and fauna of a cloud forest!!

Itinerary

Day 1 : CUSCO – CACHORA – CHIQUISCA

We will pick you up from your hotel at 5.00 am to take you for a 3 hour ride the to Cachora Village where we enjoy breakfast and get ready your backpacks before we begin the trek. The first 2 hours of this hike takes you along a beautiful, descending path offering some spectacular views of a valley and a river. The path is surrounded by exotic flowers and plants such as begonias, orchids, cacti and endemic birds. Once we reach the view point of Capuliyoc (2,900 meters above sea level), we have the privillage to enjoy spectacular views of the snow capped mountain of Padrayoc (5,400 meters). At the view point, we eat our snacks while we can take plenty of pictures of Apurimac Canyon and the Apurimac River below. Then, we start descending a unique zigzag path for about 2 hours to reach a place of our lunch (at around 2 pm) offering us some breathtaking views of the river and the canyon on the way! After lunch, you have time to relax, put your feet up and have some refreshing tea before we get ready to hike again for next 2 hours to reach our campsite (at around 5 pm)  where we spend the night at 1,900 meters.

Day 2: CHIQUISCA – MARAMPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO

We leave the campsite early after breakfast to descend to Playa Rosalina and the magnificent Apurimac River (1,550 meters) hiking for about an hour. Here, we begin a 2 hour steep climb to Santa Rosa (2,095 meters) where we have time to take a refreshing break and buy some bottled water. Then, we continue uphill for other 2 hours towards Marampata (3,000 m), a flat ground where we can rest and enjoy a splendid view of the Apurimac Canyon and the famous Inca site of Choquequirao. We have lunch there and we can use facilities as bathrooms. We will continue hiking afterwards for following two hours to reach our next campsite located just outside the Inca site (3,100 m). We can observe an amazing sunset and flying condors there!!

Day 3 : CHOQUEQUIRAO – MARAMPATA – LA PLAYA

After an early breakfast, our professional Tour Guide gives you a guided visit of the mysterious Inca site of Choquequirao explaining you about the history of the magnificent Inca site!! We also visit the most important parts of the Inca ruins such as its main square, the upper Choquequirao, a ceremonial sector and the famous Llama Sector where Incas have displayed this sacred animal on their buildings. After the visit, we have some extra time to explore and enjoy the scenery ourselves.Then, we go back to our campsite for lunch. Later on, we start returning to Marampata offering some spectacular views of the canyon along the way. There, we can observe various flowers such as orchids and different kinds of birds that can be found in this area. We hike downhill for 4 hours to reach our campsite at the village of La Playa (1,500 m) where we overnight beside the Apurimac (“Speaking God”) River!

Day 4: LA PLAYA – CAPULIYOC – CACHORA – CUSCO

We will leave the campsite very early in the morning in order to reach Cusco by the evening. We ascend to Capuliyoc for 4 hours. The trek is a once in life experience taking us through beautiful mountains observing awesome views of snowy mountains such as Padrayoc ( 5, 400 m)! If the weather allows us, we can see flying condors and eagles above our heads during the Sunrise! We eat our last outdoor lunch and then we hike for last 2 hours to get to Cachora. There, we thank and say good-bye to our horses and horseman for their big help! Afterwards, we get in our bus taking us back to Cusco.

Tips for the crew.

TREKKING CHEKLIST

  • Small day pack with personal stuff such as water, snacks, sun cream, mosquito repellent
  • Rain jacket and water proof pants if available or plastic poncho.
  • Good hiking boots with extra sacks.
  • Sandals are highly recommended due to the weather .
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces, gloves, scarf and beanie. Thermal clothing is also recommended,
  • especially for sleeping.
  • Sleeping bag
  • Good headlamp.
  • Camera, films and batteries
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain and cold
  • Sun cream especially during day time in our winter.
  • Insect repellent – there are no malaria mosquitoes around this area.
  • There are restrooms along the way so you need to take your own toilet paper.
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruits, etc.
  • Water bottle to refill with boiled water.
  • Your own medical kit with any special medications that you might require, Small towel .
  • Enough cash , you might want to buy some water, or chocolates along the way.
  • Original passport & ISIC (international student identity card – if applicable).
  • Walking sticks or poles ( Please note sticks with metal tips cannot be carried into this national park )
  • Sun glasses
  • Two sticks are very recommended.

For this Amazing Trek, we will provide you with a duffel bag to put all of your belongings in. By using standardized bags, we will ensure that all of your belongings will fit properly on the horses. The duffel bags easily fit 8 Kilograms /16 pounds per person including your sleeping bags.
